Robert Henry Betz, 86, of Route 12, Earlville, NY, passed away Monday, February 26, 2018 at the Crouse Community Center in Morrisville.
He was born February 24, 1932 in Utica, a son of German immigrants, William and Elizabeth Zimmerman Betz and was a graduate of Sherburne High School. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. On August 2, 1957, Robert married Dorothy “Dottie” Usher in Hamilton. She predeceased him on March 5, 2015. Robert worked for Oneida Electronics, and then Diebold Inc. until retiring.
Robert was a life member of the American Legion Post #0232 in Clinton. He was an antique collector and a member of the Southern Tier Antique Gas and Steam Engine Assoc.; the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors; and the Antique Wireless Assoc. He was also a member of the Brookfield and Madison County Historical Societies and the Chenango Canal Association. Robert was a founder of the Old Town of Eaton Museum. As a local historian, Robert authored several books including memoirs of Eli Perkins and most recently “The Chenango Canal Summit Level: A Visitor’s Guide”. In earlier years he enjoyed fishing and boating the local streams and ponds of Central New York.
Surviving are his children, Linda Betz of Ocala, FL; Karen Betz of Henderson, NV; Steven Betz of New Hartford, NY; a daughter-in-law, Cory McGuire of Henderson, NV; grandchildren, Christopher and Leann Jenkins; Matthew Jenkins and Katrina Betz-McGuire; great-grandchildren, Nicolai, Zekrom, Remington and Melody Jenkins; a niece, Doreen Betz Wollmer of Baton Rouge, LA; and a nephew, Donald (Sharon) Betz, Jr. of Baldwinsville, NY. He was predeceased by a brother, Donald Betz.
Funeral services with military honors will be held at 11am Saturday, March 3, 2018 at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 25 Broad St., Hamilton, NY.
Interment in Graham Cemetery, Hubbardsville will be private at the convenience of his family.
Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Friday, March 2, from 5-7pm.
