Charles A. “Chip” Webb, 83, of Park St., Norwich, NY passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at Chenango Memorial Hospital.
He was born November 15, 1925 in Beaver Meadow, NY a son of Charles I. and Cora Smith Webb. He attended the Beaver Meadow’s one-room schoolhouse through 4th grade and then the South Otselic schools until his family moved to Sherburne in 1936. He graduated from Sherburne High School in 1943, after which he started working at Webb & Sons. In 1944, he was drafted into the U.S. Navy where served on an LSM in the Pacific Theater of Operations. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy in 1946, he returned to Webb & Sons as its Vice President and Co-owner, where he was in charge of production and transportation for the company. Even after he sold his interest in the business, he continued to work for Webb & Sons/Lok-N-Logs until his retirement in 2005. At one time, he was married to Doris E. Purdy. On September 21, 1974, he married Mary C. Babcock in Norwich.
Mr. Webb was a member of the Broad Street United Methodist Church in Norwich, where he sang in the choir and was a volunteer for the Norwich Soup Kitchen, where he ran the dishwasher. He was the President of the Sherburne West Hill Cemetery Association for 12 years; a member and Past Master of the Sherburne Grange and the Pomona Grange; a member of the F&AM Lodge #444 of Sherburne; the B.P.O. Elks Lodge #1222 of Norwich; and the American Legion Post #876 of Sherburne. “Chip” was involved with the Sherburne Pageant of Bands since its inception and was honored as “Person of the Day” in 2001.
Surviving is his wife, Mary; his children, William Webb of Buffalo; Susan Papelino of Colonial Heights, VA; Warren and Karen Webb of Norwich; Sharon Webb of Sherburne; step-children, Annette and Sam Symonds of Keller, TX; Jeffrey Chaffee of Norwich; Melissa and Mark Griffin of Arlington, VA; grandchildren, Kyle Papelino of Colonial Heights, VA; Stephanie (Joe) Gallant of Rochester; Gregory Webb of Norwich; step-grandchildren, Benjamin (Kelly) Symonds of Ft. Worth, TX; Rachel Symonds of Ft. Worth, TX; Sydney Chaffee of Norwich; Michael and Emma Griffin of Arlington, VA; great-grandchildren, Klayton, Karson and Karlea Symonds; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Julian and Glenn Webb and a sister, Eloise McManus.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday, August 15, 2009 from the Broad Street United Methodist Church, 74 North Broad St., Norwich.
Interment will be in the West Hill Cemetery, Sherburne.
Friends are invited to call at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne on Friday from 4-8 PM.
