Robert T. Garrett, 91, of Waterville, NY and The Villages, FL, passed away Tuesday, November 7, 2017 in Florida.
Robert was born in Elmira, NY on September 4, 1926, a son of Frank and Harriett Garrett. He spent his early years in Saranac Lake, NY and was a 1944 graduate of UFA High School in Utica. In September 1944, he joined the U.S. Army during WWII and was stationed in Austria for two years. On January 22, 1949, he was united in marriage to Eunice "June" Helmes, a loving union of 57 years when she passed away in 2006.
Bob and June established Garrrett’s Supermarket in Waterville in 1949, which later became Food King, on the site where the present CVS is today. They had spent the last 28 years in The Villages, FL where Bob was an avid golfer who loved the game dearly. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will always be missed by his family and friends.
Bob was a communicant of St. Bernard’s Church in Waterville. He was a member of the Clifford J. Fulmer American Legion Post in Sangerfield and the Wednesday morning men’s golf league at Barker Brook Golf Course. On Fridays while in Florida, he would get together with a group of friends to play golf and follow with a picnic at Barb and Jack’s.
Bob is survived by two sons, Richard Garrett of New Hartford; Timothy Garrett of Morrisville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Ann and Dan Ventimiglia of Whitesboro; Kathleen and David "Doc" Upcraft of Waterville; his grandchildren, Michelle (Chris) Hohn, Katelyn (Dan) Cowen, Megan (Matt) Belfield; two step-grandsons, David and Christopher Ventimiglia; four great-grandchildren; a special niece Mary Helen Gaetano of New Port Richey, FL; and a special friend and companion, Pat Hunt of The Villages, FL and her family.
Services will be held at 10:30 am Saturday, December 2, 2017 from the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 210 East Main St., Waterville followed at 11am by Memorial Mass at St. Bernard’s Church, 199 Stafford Ave., Waterville.
Interment with military honors in St. Bernard’s Cemetery, Waterville will follow the Mass.
Friends are invited to call at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home on Friday, December 1 from 4-7pm.
