I first met Laura and Norman Paige in 1976 when I was selected to represent the Coast Guard Auxiliary at the United States Coast Guard's Academy Introductory Mission in the summer of 1977. I was in my junior year at Brookfield Central School when I went to a series of interviews with the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Mr. and Mrs. Paige (how I will always remember them) encouraged my folks and I throughout the multiple interview process. Along with my Mom and Dad, they were my biggest cheerleaders. I later graduated from the Coast Guard Academy and spent 35 years in a Coast Guard uniform, finally retiring in 2013. My final assignment was to serve as the 9th Coast Guard District Commander, responsible for all Coast Guard operations on the Great Lakes and portions of the eight states that surround them--including Sylvan Beach, NY--the home of Mr. and Mrs. Paige's Auxiliary Flotilla--the Flotilla that sponsored me to go to the Academy. One of my proudest moments was returning to Sylvan Beach decades later to dedicate a facility for that same Flotilla. I will forever be indebted to the Paiges for taking a chance on this young kid from Brookfield--I strived throughout my career to be worthy of their unwavering support. Thank you and Godspeed!
Michael N. Parks, Rear Admiral, U.S. Coast Guard, (Retired), Bay Village, Ohio
