Gerrit F Vanderneut, 89, of Earlville, NY, passed away peacefully with his family at his side on Tuesday, October 15, 2013 at the Chase Nursing Home in New Berlin.
He was born January 6, 1924 on Long Island, a son of Gerrit and Emma Wirschning Vanderneut and was a graduate of local schools. In July 1942, Gerrit joined the U.S. Navy, proudly serving in the Pacific Theater of Operations during WWII. He was honorably discharged in December 1946. On October 5, 1944, Gerrit married Florence Handlir in the Church of the Transfiguration in New York City. She predeceased him on September 15, 2010. Gerrit was a dairy farmer and had worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Utica for over 16 years, retiring in 1985. He was of the Baptist faith, spending many hours in devotional Bible reading with his wife. In their early years, they enjoyed roller skating together.
Surviving are his children, Gerrit “Gary” and Gloria “Cookie” Vanderneut of Hamilton; Wayne and Teresa Vanderneut of Simi Valley, CA; Glenn and Regina Vanderneut of Earlville; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. A sister, Doris Burke predeceased him.
Graveside services with military honors in the Earlville Cemetery will be private at the convenience of his family.
