Dr. John F. Upcraft, 95, of Tower St., Waterville, NY, passed away Monday, October 15, 2012 at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center, Utica.
He was born March 24, 1917 in Oswego, NY, a son of Harry and Agnes Boylan Upcraft, and was a graduate of Utica Free Academy and Hamilton College. Jack was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during WWII. While in the service, he married Mary Driscoll and they lived in Texas until his honorable discharge. Moving to Buffalo, NY, Jack attended and graduated from the University of Buffalo Dental School. The couple moved to Waterville, where Jack began his dental practice which he continued until the age of 80. Mary predeceased him in 1976. After her death, he met Lois Lloyd whose loving companionship and wonderful family became a special part of his and his children’s lives.
Dr. Upcraft was a communicant of St. Bernard’s Church in Waterville. He was a member of the American Dental Association and the Utica Dental Society. He was also a former member of the Clifford J. Fulmer American Legion Post in Sangerfield; the Waterville Planning Board; the Soldiers and Sailors Monument Committee; a former Board Member of the Tower Foundation; and a life member of the Waterville Historical Society.
Surviving are Lois Lloyd of Waterville; children, Joan (Bob) Halen, AZ; Bob (Diana) Upcraft, NC; Patricia (Bruce) Chope, FL; Dave (Kathy) Upcraft, Waterville; Susan (Keith) Yarbrough, TX; Dan (Debbie) Lloyd, West Winfield; Jane (Don) Dietz, Albany; and Wendy (Bob) DeWaine, Sherrill; grandchildren, Keith (Patrice) Halen, Heather (Jon) Danio, all of MN; Dionne (Michael) Mageloff, FL; Kevin (Melissa) Chrysler, MI; Nick (Chenney) Chope, CA; Katelyn (Dan) Cowen, Cazenovia; Megan (Matt) Upcraft, Waterville; Conor and Morgan Yarbrough, both of TX; Jennifer (David) Swaine, VA; Megan (Wes) Chase, Cicero; Dan (Nicole) Lloyd, Katie (Aaron) DeWaine, all of Syracuse; Robbie DeWaine, Sherrill; Erin (Michael) Dolen, Albany; and Carrie (Tom) Frost, Poughkeepsie; and many great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am Friday, October 19, 2012 from St. Bernard’s Church, Waterville, followed by interment in St. Bernard’s Cemetery.
Friends are invited to call at the Kloster-Northrop & Bentz Funeral Home, 210 E. Main St., Waterville on Thursday from 5-8pm.
