I am saddened to learn of the passing of a wonderful man who was a Hamilton fixture and will be missed. My thoughts go out to his wife Wanda and especially to Martha and Ruth, two friends from childhood. My deepest sympathies at your loss.

I knew Don toward the end of his teaching tenure at Colgate, and he was one of my favorite people in Hamilton. One of the nicest people I ever met - always good for a hearty conversation about anything. I lifeguarded at the Colgate pool in the 1980's and 90's, and my coworkers and I always looked forward to seeing Don and Wanda drop by for a swim. They seldom missed a day. I can still picture Don finishing his swim and wiping every last drop of water from his ears. Secondly, his performance in "The Gondoliers" was unforgettable. What a voice! In the late 1960's I was either too young or, because of attending my senior year of high school in Australia and my college years in Boston, to be in the cast of the various productions put on by the Gilbert & Sullivan Operetta Society (later the Hamilton Operetta Society), but for a few years I was able to participate as a member of the Makeup Department for the dress rehearsals and the actual performances. I remember working on Dr. Berry and how very kind he was to a "kid" who just got a kick out of being able to be a part of the show. Both his on-stage and back-stage performances made an impression on me, and the confidence he instilled in me as he patiently sat there and allowed me to “paint” his face with makeup, spirit gum and stage hair, helped me take a small step toward growing into a confident adult ready to face the world. I thank him for that.

It was a joy to know Don, to have his participation in the Sherburne community chorus, and to enjoy his sermons at the Sherburne Church of the Epiphany, to see him enjoy the Syracuse Sym in the Hamilton Park, or just to meet him on the street. We will miss him.

While subbing at the organ at St. Paul's, I played the intro for a hymn and was part way into the first verse when I realized no one was singing. I stopped, looked around, and said, "Hymn number blah blah blah?" I had transposed two of the numbers and was playing a wrong hymn. Fr. Berry said, "Let's do that one you're playing! It sounds fun!" What a truly wonderful spirit, boundless knowledge, compassion with no end. Fly with the angels, Fr. Berry.

Father Berry will be missed by all that knew him. We are glad we had a chance to have him in our lives, when he became Interim Rector at St. Paul's. His sermons were always wonderful, his voice a wonderful addition and his gentle humor, much appreciated. "Well done, good and faithful servant."
