Ida May Brooks, 84, of Green Rd., Hubbardsville, NYpassed away Tuesday, October 23, 2018 at her home with her loving family at her side.
She was born May 18, 1934 in Ilion, the daughter of Orval and Merle Graves Truman. She was a graduate of West Winfield Central School, Syracuse University at Utica College, and received her Master’s degree in Elementary Education from Syracuse University. On April 4, 1953, Ida married Lawrence J. “Larry” Brooks in Ilion. Ida lived most of her life in the West Winfield/Cedarville area. In 1973, she and Larry moved to Hubbardsville, NY and in 1983 they purchased the Canaan Campground. Larry predeceased her on January 30, 2018. A devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother, Ida cherished her family and the times they spent together. She enjoyed teaching, playing piano, camping and gardening.
While raising 3 of her 4 children Ida went back to college and in 1964 earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Utica College and her Master’s Degree in 1972 from Syracuse University. Ida began a distinguished teaching career in 1964 that touched the lives of every student who passed through the 5th grade at Brookfield Central School. She retired from Brookfield Central School in 1992 after 28 years, and then proceeded to teach at Randallsville New Life Christian School for 2 ½ years. Ida was a devout Christian and played keyboard/piano for many praise groups at churches they attended. Ida and her husband Larry traveled with a group of church members to help build houses in New Orleans, as well as other missionary work. Their home was always open to those in need.
Surviving are her children, Lawrence and Laura (Montanye) Brooks of West Winfield; Danny and Deborah (Jennings) Brooks of Carthage; Stephen and Althea (Eiholzer) Brooks, Vicki and Kevin Godfrey, all of Hubbardsville; a sister, Dorothy Pope of Cedarville; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Richard and Sharon Brooks of New Hartford; sister-in-law, Marsha Brooks of West Winfield; 14 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her twin sister, Inez Truman and her grandchildren, Christine Brooks, Jerry Brooks and Rebecca Brooks.
Ida’s family will receive family and friends for a celebration of her life from 1-4 pm Sunday, November 4, 2018 at the First Day Baptist Church fellowship hall in Brookfield, NY.
Interment in the Unadilla Forks Cemetery will be at a later date.
