CANASTOTA: On the morning of October 23rd, Betty (Palmer) Lee DeGroat, 86, passed away. She is being reunited with her husband LaVerne (Barney) C. DeGroat of 51 years, who passed in 2003. She was born April 11, 1932 in Cedarville, NY, a daughter of Lee and Helen Light Palmer and was a graduate of Morrisville High School, class of 1950. Betty raised her four children and returned to work at the school district when her children started school. She was active with 4-H for many years teaching children homemaking skills. She followed those years working at, and later retiring from, the Madison County Treasurers office. Betty and Barney spent their years of retirement traveling across the 50 states – spending a few winters as snowbirds in Florida and coming back to enjoy their grandchildren. Surviving are her children, Shawn and Connie DeGroat, Timothy and Tena DeGroat, Linda and Fred Widger, all of Canastota; 11 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Bonnie M. Berry; a grandson, Michael Henry DeGroat; two sisters, Leota Tooke and Juanita Perry; and a brother, Paul Palmer.
Funeral services will be held at 3pm Sunday, October 28, 2018 at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 31 Cedar St., Morrisville, NY.
Interment will be private in the Peterboro Cemetery.
Friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 1-3pm Sunday prior to the service.
