Obituary for Marvin Jantzen

Marvin Jantzen
Marvin Jantzen, 88, of Earlville, NY passed away Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse.
He was born on February 17, 1930 in Enola, Nebraska, a son of the late Arthur and Cora White Jantzen. His family moved to New York when he was four years old and settled in Earlville. He was a graduate of Earlville Central School in 1949 and Morrisville Agricultural and Technical College in 1951. He married Eleanor Schlernitzauer on August 30, 1952 in Earlville. She predeceased him on February 1, 1990. On January 11, 1992 he married Dorothy Hodge in Sherburne.
Marv started working for Alfred and Lonnell Cossitt when he was 14 years old and retired from Cossitt Concrete Products after 49 years of service. He was always a very creative person who invented many items for Cossitt and the Earlville Fire Department, including water curtains. Friends and family always said he “Marvinized” everything. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather who had a great love for his family. He was especially fond of trains and enjoyed music.
Marv was a dedicated member of the Earlville Fire Department for over 64 years. He had served as Chief from 1963-1968, taught fire school and fire safety, ran water shows at the Earlville Field Days, and encouraged many to become active firefighters. He also rebuilt the original 155 truck.
Surviving are his wife, Dot; his children, Pam and Timothy Tobin of Charleston, NH; Eric and Catherine Jantzen of Herkimer; Jill and Jim King of Thomasville, NC; step-children, Sandra and Ernie Barden of Smyrna; Greg Hodge (Terry Drake) of South New Berlin; Shawn and Dawn Fisher of Hannibal; Michael and Sheryl Hodge of Sherburne; grandchildren, Michael (Stacey), John (Trish), Katie Jantzen, Tyler and Mollie Tobin, and Kevin King; great-grandchildren, Abbigail, Alyssa, John, Julieanna Jantzen, Leandra Castle and Bailie King; Dot’s eleven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by three grandchildren, Dennis and Tricia Jenne and William Yerton.
Funeral services will be held at 3pm Saturday, September 8, 2018 at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 3 Preston St., Earlville, followed by interment in the Earlville Cemetery.
Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Saturday from 1-3pm prior to the service.
Contributions in his memory may be made to the Earlville Fire Department; the Sherburne Fire Department; S.O.M.A.C.; or a charity of one’s choice.
