Marcia Sitts died on July 15, 2018, in Hamilton, New York. She was 78 years old. She was born Marcia Louise Gillis, daughter of Edmund Gillis and Francis Gillis (b. Beeck), and sister to Georgia (m. Goodman) on August 3, 1939, in Hempstead, New York. She lived in Hamilton at the time of her death.
Marcia is survived by her husband of 59 years, Edward, and nine children: Anne, David, Michael, Laurie, Karen, Nadine, Elizabeth, Joel, and Anthony, as well as 18 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Countless cats, dogs, birds, fish, and even a horse or two were loved and sheltered by her.
Marcia grew up on the Long Island shore. She attended Middlebury College in Vermont, where she met Edward. They were married January 3, 1959, and after some forays to both Georgia and Maryland, returned to New York for the remainder of her life.
Faith in God and Jesus, and Marcia’s unwavering participation in the Episcopal Church, were cornerstones of her life. She brought an inquisitive mind, an eager heart, and delightful sense of humor and wonder to her faith. She had been a member of St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church in Hamilton for the past three decades.
Marcia had a keen love of the outdoors and gardening, as well as being an avid reader and writer. She particularly engaged her love of writing late in life, exploring both poetry and prose, including a column for her church’s monthly newsletter. She always sought to encourage people to recognize the stories in their own lives and seek to express them.
She participated in a number of social groups, including Bible Study, a writing group, and her “Crazy Knittles” quilting/knitting group. Marcia was also active in a number of volunteer organizations, including Crisis Intervention and Victims of Violence, as well as always a passionate advocate for both children and their parents.
The family calling hour will be held at St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church in Hamilton, NY on July 21, 2018, at 10 a.m., followed immediately by a memorial service at 11 a.m. A light reception will be held directly following the service.
