Obituary for Mary Louise Von Matt

MARY L. VON MATT

Mary Louise Von Matt, 86, of Waterville passed away Monday, May 21, 2018 at the Siegenthaler Center in New Hartford, with her loving family by her side.

She was born July 4, 1931 in Utica, a daughter of Leo and Marie Wildhack Malone.
She was a graduate of Waterville High School and St. Luke’s Memorial Nursing School. On May 22, 1954, Mary Louise married Kaspar Von Matt in New Hartford. She had worked as an RN at St. Luke’s Hospital, and with the Visiting Nurses Association; the Gerrit Smith Infirmary in Eaton, Community Memorial Hospital in Hamilton, the Harding Nursing Home and Hamilton College in Clinton. She was an avid card player, especially enjoying pitch games with her family where banter was encouraged. She was a loving and dedicated wife, mother and grandmother who would celebrate her birthday by acknowledging her grandchildren’s accomplishments for the year and award each a “Grammy Award”. She enjoyed gardening and took great pride in her award winning porch flower boxes.

Mary Louise was a devoted communicant of St. Bernard’s Church in Waterville, where she began the Bereavement and Adoration committees. She was a member of the St. Luke’s Memorial Alumni and met with her nursing friends regularly. She was a member of the Chenango Water Exercise Group in Hamilton and the Presbyterian Home swimming group. She was also a member of the Waterville Home Bureau and the Colorful Bonnets.

Surviving are her husband, Kaspar; her children, Valerie “Jill” Kane of Waterville; Lisa Blume of Boca Raton, FL; Melissa and Scott Whitehead of Waterville; Greg and Jennifer Von Matt of Waterville; daughter-in-law, Sharon Von Matt of Waterville; her beloved grandchildren, Danielle, Matt, Jenny, Shawna, Jeffrey, Tara, Jeffie, Evan, Ethan, and William; cherished great-grandchildren, JaQuary, Abiri and Jacob; a sister, Kathleen Mercer of Nanuet; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Jeffrey Von Matt; a son-in-law, Joseph Kane; two brothers, Leo and Richard Malone; and a sister, Carol Gagnon.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am Friday, May 25, 2018 at St. Bernard’s Church, 199 Stafford Ave., Waterville, followed by interment in St. Bernard’s Cemetery.

Friends are invited to call at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, Kloster & Northrop Memorial Chapel, 210 E. Main St., Waterville on Thursday from 5-8pm.
