Katherine L. Smith, 82, of Poolville Rd., passed away Thursday, February 15, 2018 at the Waterville Residential Care Center following a brief stay. She was born September 3, 1935 in Eaton a daughter of Melvin and Hazel Heap Pitchford and received her education in local schools. On September 6, 1952 in Hamilton she married Alfred E. Smith. He predeceased her on October 13, 2002. She later married William A. Van Wie, Jr. in November of 2005. Katherine was employed at Mc Laughlin’s Department Store in Hamilton and Norwich for several years. She loved to travel and enjoyed ceramics and camping. Katherine devoted her life to her children, family and working the farm. Surviving are her husband William; her children, Donald and Laura Smith of Hamilton; Douglas and Sue Smith and Dale Smith and his girlfriend Kathy McGrath all of Earlville; Doreen Garry of Hamilton; Diane Helly of Hubbardsville; a brother, Melvin Jesse Pitchford, Jr. of TN; twelve grandchildren and several great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son in law Thomas Helly and daughter in law Dorothy Smith.

Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.

Friends are invited and may call on Saturday, February 24, 2018 from 3 to 5 PM at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 25 Broad St., Hamilton, NY 13346

Interment will be held in the spring in the Eaton Village Cemetery.
