Obituary for Gaetano J. "Guy" Scerbo

Gaetano “Guy” J. Scerbo, 92, of Sanger Hill Rd., Waterville, NY, passed away Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse.
He was born January 31, 1926 in Utica, a son of Fortunato T. and Adeline Morelle Scerbo and was a graduate of Oriskany Falls High School. Guy proudly served his country during WWII from 1944-46 with the U.S. Army 704th Military Police Battalion, attaining the rank of T-5. On November 24, 1949, Guy married Frances R. Teti at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Utica, a blessed union of 68 years. Guy owned and operated Scerbo Shoe Store in Waterville for over 40 years, from 1957 until 1990. Following that, he worked for the J.C. Penney Company in the shoe department for over 23 years until retiring on January 2, 2018.
Guy was a communicant of St. Bernard’s Church in Waterville. He was a member of the Clifford J. Fulmer American Legion Post #92 in Sangerfield; an Honorary Life member of the Knights of Columbus #189 of Utica; was a member of the Waterville Business Association and was a member and Past President & Secretary of Rotary International.
Surviving are his beloved wife, Frances; his children, Linda and Charles Steiger of Stittville; Fortunato “Fred” and Patricia Scerbo of Deerfield; Adeline and Peter Forrester of Clinton; Angela Paravati and David Harrington of Whitesboro; his grandchildren, Matthew Steiger and Kari Steiger, Celena and Jay Yourdon, Fortunato III “Fred” and Kimberly Scerbo, Audrea and James Rinaldo, Ryan and Kristina Scerbo, Jordan and Katelyn Scerbo, Emily and David Ellis, Peter Forrester III, Brittany and Benjamin Lowe; great-grandchildren, Dyllan, Eileen, Susan, Finley, Cambry, Caleb, Mya, Madelyn, Sheldon, Bella, Landon, Baylie, Gianna, Griffith, Emerson, Elisea, Ethan, Lincoln and Abram. Also surviving are his sister, Angela Veschusio of New Hartford; a brother, Frederick L. Scerbo of Oneida; sister-in-law, Aurora Scerbo of Arizona; brother-in-law, Thomas D’Amico of Montreal, Canada; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a sister, Pauline D’Amico and a brother, Richard Scerbo.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated with military honors at 11am Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at St. Bernard’s Church 199 Stafford Ave., Waterville.
Interment will be in St. Bernard’s Cemetery in the spring.
Friends are invited to call at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 210 E. Main St., Waterville on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9pm.
