SANGERFIELD, NY: Adele Chernoff Halligan passed peacefully with family by her side in Fruitland, MD on October 31, 2017. Born Adele Kay in 1925, she lived a full life of 92 years.
She was born in the Bronx Borough of New York City, the daughter of Hyman and Dora Kaye. In 1942, she married David Chernoff of Sangerfield, NY and moved upstate to the Chernoff family farm where she resided for 75 years. He passed away in 1983 after 41 years of marriage. During that time, Adele helped in the development of their family farm land by bringing in many industries to the central NY area, including Agway, Blue Seal, the NYSDOT building, Champion Homes and Big John’s Fertilizer. After serving as a postal clerk, she held the position of Postmaster at the Sangerfield Post Office until her retirement in 1992.
Adele was a professional photographer that shot many of the weddings of newlyweds of the central NY area. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, Waterville Women’s Club and the Waterville Historical Society.
In 1986, she married James Halligan of Sauquoit and enjoyed fishing at their camp in Cape Vincent, NY. She remained married for 15 years until Jim’s passing in 2001. She married again to Forest Cooper of Waterville until his passing in 2009.
She is survived by her four children, Dianne and Larry Sussman of Dover, DE; Bradley and Sharon Chernoff of Lady Lake, FL; Chuck and Barb Chernoff of Skaneateles, NY; Hal and Nancy Chernoff of Fruitland, MD. She also leaves six grandchildren, Jeffrey Sussman, Brian Sussman, Nicholas Chernoff, William Chernoff, Becki Chernoff and Carrie Jo Hicks, as well as twelve great-grandchildren, Zoe, Sophia, Shannon, Liam, Maddison, Sadie, Delia, Tyler, Alex, Tyler, Hallie and Mackenzie. She was predeceased by her siblings Francis Neuman, Roslyn Epstein, Louis Kaye and Irving Kaye, and two grandchildren, Shannon Chernoff and Ben Chernoff.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 210 E. Main St., Waterville on Saturday, November 25, 2017 at 2 pm.
The family will receive friends following the service until 4pm.
