Ronald "Ron" Schaupp MD
Ronald Schaupp, MD, of Hamilton, formerly of Watertown, NY passed away Sunday, October 15, 2017.
Ron was born in Floral Park, L.I. New York on May 17, 1934. He was educated in the public school system including Sewanhaka High School in Floral Park. He attended Colgate University, Hamilton, NY where he earned a B.A. degree in 1956. He attended Hahnemann University School of Medicine and received his MD degree in 1960. After serving a rotating internship at West Jersey Hospital, Camden, NJ in 1961, he served as a US Naval officer as Lieutenant in the medical corps from 1961-63. While in the Navy, he served with the Destroyer Division 282 based in Norfolk, VA from 1961-62. During this time, he was responsible for the medical evaluation of the monkeys currently being used in rocket launching and spent fifty percent of the time at sea. His second year in the Navy was spent as a general medical officer at the US Naval Air Station, Minneapolis MN. He returned to Philadelphia and Hahnemann Hospital where he served a three-year residency in Radiology. During his residency, he was elected to membership in the Hahnemann “Toads”, a select group of physicians that spent more than three years of exemplary service in both diagnosis and treatment of the less fortunate people, many of whom lived on the streets. He was one of the early participants in the Philadelphia Breast Cancer Mammography project in early 1960's. He spent his training in Radiologic Pathology at the AFIP (Armed Forces Institute of Pathology) In Washington, DC Walter Reed Campus. His specialized Pediatric Radiology was performed at CHOP (Children's Hospital of Philadelphia). He joined South Jersey Radiology Assoc. in Cherry Hill, NJ after his residency, where he practiced for eight years. He relocated to Watertown, NY to join Northern Radiology Associates in 1974. Ron was Board Certified in Radiology, including General Radiology, Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Oncology in 1967 and was Board Certified by the American Conjoint Board of Nuclear Medicine which included the American Boards of Internal Medicine, Pathology and Radiology in 1975. He joined South Jersey Radiology Assoc. in Cherry Hill, NJ after his residency, where he practiced for eight years. He relocated to Watertown, NY to join Northern Radiology Associated in 1974, and became Chief of Radiology and President of Northern Diagnostic Imaging.
While in Watertown, Dr. Schaupp was responsible for the acquisition of a full-time Board Certified Oncologist and obtaining the first CT and MRI units in Watertown. He was also the first radiologist north of Syracuse to preform interventional procedures utilizing ultra sound and CT guidance which saved countless patients the need for more invasive surgical procedures. Dr. Schaupp was head of Northern Radiology from 1985-89 when he retired from full-time practice. He was asked to continue to cover the group’s private office and the radiologic services at Watertown’s Mercy Health Center, which he did until late 1998. Dr. Schaupp and his wife, June, built a home near the northern end of Lake Moraine in Hamilton and moved there in May 2000. Ron was a Lay Eucharistic Minister at St. Thomas' Episcopal Church in Hamilton. He loved playing cello, reading and was an accomplished photographer.
In 2005, Ron was elected a member of the Colgate University Alumni Board of Directors (now known as the Colgate University Alumni Council). During his fiftieth reunion weekend, Ron was awarded the prestigious Maroon Citation, one of Colgate’s highest honors for his devotion, dedication and service to Colgate.
Survivors include June, his beloved wife for over 50 years; his daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer Lynn and Gregory Dembs of Haddonfield, NJ; his son, Jeffrey Todd Schaupp of Colorado; a sister, Bette Floyd of Indiana; three grandchildren, Alexandria, Drew and Jillian.
