Obituary for Ruth W. Jemzura (Wood)

Ruth Wood Jemzura, 97, of Sherburne, NY passed away Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at the Valley View Manor Nursing Home in Norwich, NY.
She was born August 9, 1920 in Champion, NY, the daughter of LeRoy Alfred and Mary Geneva (Adner) Wood and was a graduate of local schools. She received her teachers certificate from Potsdam College, and her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from SUNY, Oneonta. On June 27, 1942, Ruth married George Jemzura in Rome, NY. He predeceased her on May 8, 2001. Ruth taught reading in the Carthage area, and then in the one room schoolhouse in North Norwich in the 1940’s. She suspended her teaching career to raise her family, and resumed teaching in the 1960’s in South New Berlin. Following her retirement, she helped to staff the Bargain Basket Thrift Shop in Earlville on Thursdays. She enjoyed having coffee with her friends and loved spending time with her only grandson, Brady, who was the light of her life.
Ruth is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Riley Whearty of AZ and MI; a son, David Jemzura of Sherburne; her beloved grandson, Brady; a sister-in-law, Eloise “Teddy” Wood; and several cousins. She was predeceased by four brothers, Alfred, Melvin, Paul and Dennis Wood.
Graveside services will be held at the convenience of her family in the Hillside Cemetery, Carthage, NY.
Contributions in her memory may be made to the Holy Family School, 17 Prospect St., Norwich, NY 13815.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne.
