Hugh McAlester Pinchin, who lived for 42 years in Hubbardsville NY, died on May 17, 2017 after a short stay in hospital.
Hugh was born in England in the summer of 1939, born into World War II, his father in the British Navy. He grew up in coastal towns around the UK, valuing most his time as a boy in Cornwall. He went to Sherborne, a boarding school in Dorset, and then, age 18, left England for Canada where he attended the University of British Columbia. He later came to the US, earning a Ph.D. in economics at Yale.
Hugh taught international economics at Colgate from 1965-2007. His research involved work on Canadian tariffs, and included time at the Canadian Department of Regional Economic Expansion in Ottawa. His teaching involved courses in international trade and in Colgate’s core curriculum. Hugh took Colgate students to London nine times on the semester-long Colgate Economics Study Group, allowing him to bring them, and himself, back to England.
In his (most appreciated) retirement he studied genealogy, contextualizing previous generations within wider historical forces. These studies involved travel to Glasgow, to Belfast, Florence Alabama, to Yeovil England, Chios Greece, and, accompanying his cousins, to Ypres and the Orkney Islands.
Although he had a global perspective and penchant for travel, the place that Hugh Pinchin loved best was his home on Quarterline Road in Hubbardsville; it was a landscape that never disappointed, the fields, the house and pond. And he tended it with care.
He leaves behind his wife of 47 years Jane Lagoudis Pinchin, whom he met at Colgate when they both began teaching, with whom he had three children Sarah, Katerina "Nina" (Kevin Scott), and William (Dorie Pinchin), and their three grandbabies: Hugh Scott, Eleanor "Nora" Pinchin, and Eleni Jane Scott.
Beloved, wryly funny, a moral compass to family and friends, he will be missed beyond measure.
A service will be held at 11am on the 24th of June in the Memorial Chapel at Colgate University.
A luncheon at Colgate's Merrill House will follow the service.
Interment in the Graham Cemetery, Hubbardsville, NY will be at 3pm
Arrangements have been entrusted to Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 25 Broad St., Hamilton.
