Elizabeth J. “Betty” Kanavaros, 94, of Kemp Rd., Waterville, NY, passed away Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at the Waterville Residential Care Center.
She was born March 15, 1923 in Limerick, Ireland, a daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Frawley Anslow and was educated in schools there. She immigrated to the United States in 1956 at the age of 33. On May 7, 1960, Betty married James A. Kanavaros in Bayshore, LI. NY. He predeceased her on August 5, 2014. Betty had worked at Macy’s, Herald Square, and in banking on Wall Street. She moved to the Waterville area in 1984. She was a talented seamstress who made clothing, including wedding dresses, curtains and bedspreads. Her family was her greatest joy and she was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
Betty was a very active member and communicant of St. Bernard’s Church in Waterville where she was a Eucharistic minister and taught First Communion classes. She also volunteered at the Harding Nursing Home for many years.
Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Timothy Jones of Waterville; step-son, James (Theresa) Kanavaros of Clarks Summit, PA; a sister, Margaret LaMon of Long Island; and two grandsons, Kevin and Brendan Jones; two step-grandsons, Thomas and Jaime Kanavaros; many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her dear friends, Carol Tower, Elfie Goedeker, Joan Stephenson, Pat Pisiak and Anne Sally. She was predeceased by a son, Kevin P. Kanavaros in 1983.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 3PM Monday, May 1, 2017 from St. Bernard’s Church, 199 Stafford Ave., Waterville.
Interment will be in St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale, LI, NY at the convenience of her family.
Friends are invited to call at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 210 E. Main St., Waterville on Sunday from 5-7pm.
