Obituary for John R. Foster

John R. Foster
John R. Foster, 73, of Madison St., Waterville, NY, passed away Monday, January 2, 2017 at his home.
He was born September 21, 1943 in Fulton, NY, a son of the late Kenneth and Esther Balcolm Foster and was a graduate of Fulton High School. John served in the U.S. Air Force from 1964-68. On August 31, 1989, John married Myrna E. (Banner) Halstead in Fulton. John was an expert mechanic on lawn and garden equipment, 2- and 4-cycle engines, and had worked for Major Repair Shop in Fulton until retiring. The couple moved to Waterville in 2000 when Myrna became pastor of the United Methodist Church and John silently dedicated his time as the church caretaker. He loved to keep busy caring for their home, doing gardening and yard work, feeding the birds, and especially lending a helping hand to anyone in the community who needed him. He enjoyed the outdoors in all seasons.
John attended the United Methodist Church in Waterville, and was a former member of the F&AM Lodge in Fulton.
Surviving are his wife of 27 years, Myrna; his children, John Michael and Tina Foster of Central, SC; Kevin Foster of WI; Helen Marie Shedrick and Robert “Bob” Mayne of Waterville; Ruth and George Kirk of Park Hill, OK; Esther and Michael Williams of Wolcott; and Thomas Halstead of Orwell; sisters-in-law, Marion Banner of Cortland; Shelly Ann (Leon) Caraptyan of Oswego; twelve grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Memorial Services will be held at 11am Saturday, January 7, 2017 from the United Methodist Church, 401 Tower St., Waterville.
Interment with military honors will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Volney, NY in the spring.
Friends are invited to call at the church on Saturday from 9-11am prior to the service.
Contributions in his memory may be made to the United Methodist Church, 214 Madison St., Waterville, NY 13480.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 210 E. Main St., Waterville.
