Mary Ellen Gates, 89 of Welshbush Rd., Frankfort, NY died Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at the home of her daughter, Mary, in Pennsylvania.
Mary was a mother of six children and wife of the late Leslie T. Gates and was dearly loved by her family and friends.
Mary was born in Utica NY, daughter of the late John and Helen Collins Bogan. She graduated from UFA high school in 1945 and after graduation worked at the Foster Paper Company as a chemist. She later attended Mohawk Community College and worked at the West Frankfort School as a teaching assistant for two years. Mary then worked at Masonic Home where she retired after 20 years.
Mary was a devoted parishioner at St Anthony of Padua and St Agnes Church in Utica NY for over 50 years. On October 15, 1949, she married Leslie T. Gates in Blessed Sacrament Church, a blessed union of 46 years. She cherished her family and her greatest joy was being surrounded by family and friends.
Surviving are her beloved children: four daughters, Mary Miller of PA and her son David; Leslie Gates (formerly Gianotti) of NC and her son Michael; Gail and Bob Kenny of TX and their daughters Katie and Kristie; Irene and Art Tooker of NY, and son Roy; John and Lorie Gates of NC and their daughters Amanda and Jessica: and a sister-in-law Michelle Gates; godson Mark Murphy of NY and many nephews, nieces and cousins. Mary is predeceased by her daughter Nancy Arel of NC and three brothers: Stuart and sister-in-law Pearl Bogan of NY, John and sister-in-law Marian Bogan of NY and Thomas Bogan of NY who died in childhood and sister-in-law Helen and Ted Donahue of WA and brother-in-law Gerald Gates of CA.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1pm Saturday, November 26, 2016 from St Anthony of Padua and St Agnes Church, Bleecker St., Utica NY. The family will receive friends in church at the conclusion of the Mass.
Burial will be in St. Bernard’s Cemetery, Waterville.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Stevens Swan Humane Society or St Jude Children’s Hospital.
