Obituary for Mona L. Brown (Messersmith)
MONA L. BROWN
BOUCKVILLE: Mona L. Brown, 93, long time resident of the Pine Woods area, passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2019 after a prolonged stay at the Crouse Community Center in Morrisville.
She was born October 9, 1925 at home near Marathon, NY, a daughter of David and Myrtle Wiley Messersmith. She graduated from Marathon Central School in 1943 and then entered the WWII Cadet Nursing Corps. and was sent to Adelphi College in Garden City, NY to earn her RN degree. She married James Brown, Sr. in 1946 and they had 5 children. He predeceased her. She worked as a nurse at Cortland Hospital, did private duty nursing, worked at Gerrit Smith Infirmary and at Harding Nursing Home. For many years, she was a Madison County Public Health Nurse until retiring. Mona was a very kind, loving and beautiful person who was devoted to family and friends. Anyone who met her was grateful they knew her. She will be dearly missed by all. She was a “Jack of all trades” who enjoyed baking, knitting, gardening and keeping in touch with family and friends.
Mona was a long-standing member of the Bouckville United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her children, Sue Dooley of Arkansas; Jim Brown of Syracuse; Lory (Tim) Huller of Taberg; Tami (David) Crane of Chenango Forks; Bonny (Robert) Bowie of Sidney; daughter-in-law, Laura Brown of Georgetown; grandchildren, Robert Lowe, Melyssa Rogers, Bryan Dooley, Kyle Dooley, R.J. Brown, Jonathan Brown, Sarah Wiggins, Amanda Reid, Leanna Crane, Micah Bowie and Landon Bowie; 18 great-grandchildren; brother John (Loretta) Messersmith of Old Saybrook, CT; sister-in-law, Gwen (Robert) Stevens of Marathon. She was predeceased by her parents, two brothers, Edgar Walburn and Benton Walburn, and a son-in-law, Michael Dooley.
Memorial Services will be held at 1pm Saturday, January 5, 2019 at the Bouckville United Methodist Church with Rev. Gary Spraker officiating. A luncheon will follow the service.
Interment is private at the convenience of her family.
Contributions in her memory may be made to the Bouckville United Methodist Church, or the Crouse Community Center Activity Fund.
