Waterville: Hubert “Bert’ Eastman, 87, of Peck Rd., passed away Monday, August 29, 2016 at the Harding Nursing Home in Waterville.
He was born October 6, 1928 in Waterville, a son of the late Ralph W. and Lucretia Irene Morgan Eastman and received his education at Waterville school until 8th grade when he left school and started working full time on the family farm known as The Good Luck Farm. Bert helped pedal milk for his father Ralph from the farm around Waterville with horse and buggy, worked in the fields, woods, and many other farm chores. Bert’s first job outside the farm was in the Waterville canning factory making 5 cents an hour. He also did farm work for Charles “Chuck” Harris and Oney Ogden. Bert always said he never had to go looking for work, it always found him. After his days of farm work and the canning factory, Bert took a job as a truck driver for Russell Dahlin’s Handling Service. He eventually took over the business and became the owner/operator of Bert Eastman’s Handling Service. Down the road, Wickes Lumber in Sangerfield hired Bert as a sub-contract driver and eventually he went to deliver materials for them full time. Bert was employed with Wickes for almost 40 years and retired in 1997. Following that he continued driving in private trucking for Don Gregory. On August 19th, 1950 Bert married his first wife Rosamond Albrecht whom he later divorced. On December 12, 1975 in Waterville he was united in marriage to the former Robin Rose Gridley. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Utica while married to Rosamond. He was also a member of the Beaver River Fish and Game Club, the Waterville Fish and Game Club, and the Waterville Snowmobile Club WASTA. He was very active in his family serving as Family Reunion President for over 40 years. Bert had a love for driving truck and working with horses as he was well known for being in many local parades with the horses. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed spending time at his camp in the Adirondacks on Stillwater Reservoir known as Beaver River.
Surviving are his wife Robin; a daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and Jefferson Mayne of Brookfield; two sons and daughters-in-law, Phillip and Tory Eastman of KY; Jared and Mariesa Eastman of Waterville, a brother and two sisters-in-law Russell and Margaret “Peggy” Eastman of Durhamville; Edith Eastman of Deansboro; and grandchildren, Carl, Scott and Rick Mayne, Nathan Eastman, Kyle and Micah Eastman, many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sons Chad Hubert Eastman and Daniel Eastman; a granddaughter Paula Mayne; three sisters, Doris Sonia, Helen Noreen Recor and Hazel Weaver, as well as an infant sister, Julia; three brothers, Robert, Paul and Arnold Eastman.
Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family.
Interment will be in the Waterville Cemetery.
