Obituary for Paul J. Nelson

Paul J. Nelson, 83, of Morrisville, passed away Thursday, January 14, 2016 at his home.
He was born January 6, 1933 in Carbondale, PA, a son of Paul J. and Sophie Gliha Nelson. He was a graduate of St. Rose Academy in Carbondale, Scranton University in 1958, and received his Masters Degree from Florida State University in 1960. Paul proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps. from 1952 to 1955, and was honorably discharged as a Lance Corporal. On September 8, 1956, Paul married Joyce L. Williams in Carbondale. They moved to Morrisville in 1964 where Paul was a professor of English and Philosophy at SUNY, Morrisville from 1964 until retiring in 1994.
Paul was a communicant of St. Joan of Arc Church in Morrisville. He enjoyed bowling and was an avid golfer. He was a horse racing enthusiast who truly loved the sport.
Surviving are his children, Pamela Nelson and her husband, Peter Buck of Saratoga Springs; Judith Nelson and her husband, Rob Vogel of Oneonta; Paul Nelson of Peaks Island, ME; and Mark Nelson of Fort Collins, CO; a brother, John Nelson of Oxford; his grandchildren, Sarah Buck and Peter Buck, both of Saratoga Springs; and Paul Nelson of Peaks Island, ME; several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11am Saturday, January 23, 2016 from St. Joan of Arc Church in Morrisville.
There will be no calling hours.
Interment with military honors will be made in the Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville, NY at the convenience of his family.
A gathering of family and friends to celebrate his life will be held in the spring at a date and time to be announced.
Contributions in his memory may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc., 4277 Middle Settlement Rd., New Hartford, NY 13413; or to the Smithfield Fire Department, Peterboro, NY 13134.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 31 Cedar St., Morrisville, NY.
