Condolences

Condolence From: Mark
Condolence: I was in the high school band with Denise. She played flute and I played tuba. We went to school dances together and she was the first girl I kissed (only once and on the forehead after a dance after walking her home. We were all very innocent and respectful back then or at least she and I were).

I went into the USMC (1967-70) and to Vietnam (1968-69). Denise would write me thick letters that seemed like daily but working 20 hr days, 7 days a week, I never had time or the energy to read them. I would only have time to look at the end to see if she still signed it with love Denise. I never wrote anyone a letter because I thought that if I got killed then they would at least have a few more days of peace before hearing about me and I was always too tired to do anything. I survived the war but changed and knew that I could not marry Denise. I feared I was not in a good mental place. I was confused to the max and needed many years, perhaps forever to work it out. I also knew that she was still mentally young vs my being very old mentally by the time I came home.

I did not marry her and thought anyone would be a better husband than I could be to her. I let Denise go because I loved her. I did have a chance to talk to her via phone many years latter when she was working in the hospital (thanks to finding her on the internet / classmates I think). I was sad to hear about the amount of sadness in her life and I knew she blamed me which was ok and most likely my fault because I just left her alone after getting home. I also left NY and went to Fla and many places for many years never returning to NY again.

I finally got married very late in life and have one daughter but I will always have a love and warm place in my heart for Denise and what we shared as kids. I will also always be sad for any pain I may have caused Denise, or anyone else. It seems that no matter how hard we try to not hurt the ones we love, well, it just does not work out the way we would like thing to work out no matter what we do.

All of my friends seem to be dead or dying and soon we will all be together again. That's life.

May God bless and comfort all of Denise's loved ones, all of us and may we all forgive each other, including ourselves.

Mark
